SALARIES HAVE GROWED LESS OF PRICES
MILAN – The salaries of the last four years have increased, but not as much as inflation.
Istat says this in a study that analyzes the payrolls of employees from ’93 to ’97.
During that time, average monthly salaries increased by 14.5 percent, while the cost of living jumped by 15.5.
The recovery in terms of real power has not been total for both private and public employees.
For the former, the average increase was 13.5 per cent (the highest peak in the credit-insurance sector, which saw an increase in the payroll of 18.3) for the public sector of 15.1.
The analysis, therefore, is in contrast with the criticisms made by Renato Brunetta, Polo economist, Aran and Franco Bassanini, Minister of Public Administration, accused of having granted the distribution of contractual increases favoring the state higher than inflation.
“ISTAT data do justice to much of the controversy over increases in civil servants – said Bassanini – In fact, a recent study by the OECD shows that in Italy there has been a steady decline in the real salaries of civil servants between 1991 and 1995 and a corresponding reduction in the percentage of GDP destined for public sector wages
