Zidane and Materazzi
peace has broken out
Four years after the “historic” hit by the French to the Italian defender in the 2006 World Cup final, peace would break out between Zinedine Zidane and Marco Materazzi, according to what the Madrid sports daily “Marca” writes.
The two sportsmen met by chance yesterday in the hotel in Milan that hosted Real Madrid. Materazzi was waiting for his friend José Mourinho, the coach of the Spanish team and his former coach at Inter, in the hotel lobby when Zidane, adviser to the president of Real Florentino Perez, arrived. The two had not spoken since the 2006 incident, which had cost the French expulsion. Italy then beat the French on penalties.
According to Marca, Zidane and Materazzi first greeted each other, coldly. Then they started talking. And in the end, says the Spanish sports daily, they “concluded a peace treaty”. “The scene – writes Marca – ended with an affectionate hug: the past is forgotten”.
