Even the State of Washington
legalizes same-sex marriages
The state governor of Washington, Democrat Christine Gregoire, today signed the law that makes same-sex marriage legal in her state, although in reality same-sex couples will still have to wait to get married.
On 2 February the bill was approved by the State Senate, and last Wednesday by the Chamber, and therefore, with the signature of Governor Gregoire, the measure should come into effect within 90 days.
However, the opposing associations have announced that they will collect the necessary signatures to submit the new law to a referendum, in the November elections.
After the state of New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, New Hampshire and Vermont, in addition to the District of Columbia of the capital Washington, the state of Washington is the seventh of the states of the Union whose institutions have legalized the marriage of persons of the same sex. Last week, moreover, a San Francisco appeals court ruled that the ban on homosexual marriage in California is unconstitutional.
