Ban Ki-moon visits her at home
RANGOON – UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon met with Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi in Rangoon for the first time this morning. Ban was received in the private residence of Suu Kyi, who became a deputy after the by-elections of April 1st.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon hailed as a “proof of flexibility in the name of the superior cause of the people” the decision of Aung San Suu Kyi to swear in Parliament with the other new deputies of the National League for Democracy, thus unleashing a dispute that threatened to undermine the atmosphere of relaxation created by the reforms of the last year of the country.
At the end of the meeting held in Rangoon with San Suu Kyi in the house that for many years was the prison of the Burmese Lady, the UN secretary general said: “I truly admire and respect the decision that Suu Kyi took”. So, Ban insisted that the lifting of political and economic sanctions towards Burma is not enough: “The international community must do more, it must go further”.
