100 kilometers off the coast of Miyako
TOKYO – A strong 6.2-degree earthquake on the Richter scale was recorded off the Japanese coast, almost 100 kilometers north-east of the city of Miyako. The hypocenter is 9.7 kilometers deep. There was no damage or tsunami alert.
The devastating tsunami of 11 March 2011 struck the same area, albeit a hundred kilometers further south. In that case the earthquake was much stronger, 9 degrees on the Richter scale.
