Foiled attack in Sarajevo. The pm: “They expected to do 100 deaths”
SARAJEVO – Foiled terrorist attack in Sarajevo, where a group of Islamic extremists was planning for the end of the year an attack in which “a hundred people” would have been killed. Anti-terrorism prosecutor Dubravko Campara announced it, according to local press reports, announcing the arrest of 11 people.
The alleged perpetrators were arrested on 22 December in different areas of the city. They met to pray in a rented apartment on the outskirts of Sarajevo where a flag of IS stood out. The Sarajevo court ordered preventive detention for 30 days for eight of them. The alleged terrorists are under investigation for recruitment and public incitement to terrorist activities,
“They were threatening to carry out an attack with explosives, in which 100 people would be killed,” said Campara. The arrested lawyer rejected the accusations as “a farce” and claimed that his clients were simply “practicing their religion”.
The goal was to place a bomb under a police car or at a gathering place in order to hit many people. But the explosive has not yet been found. “Material evidence of contacts with the Islamic State has been seized,” said Campara.
