Syria, coalition raid: the US “accidentally” kills soldiers

The humanitarian aid promised to the population does not yet arrive, the violence continues to increase, the new truce in Syria sponsored by the US and Russia appears to be failing after only five days. This evening, at the end of the most tense day since the beginning of the ceasefire, a new blow, the heaviest: after the denunciation of Damascus, the American-led anti-ISIS coalition admitted to having struck “unintentionally” a government base in the east of the country, near Dayr az Zor, where loyalist troops have resisted the siege of the Islamic state for months. It is the first time that the US-led deployment has hit the forces of Damascus since the conflict began. An “error”, this of the coalition, cost the lives of 62 Syrian soldiers while another hundred soldiers were injured.

Regret of the Obama administration. The Obama administration has expressed American regret over the “unintended loss of life” following the air raids of the international anti-ISIS coalition led by the US. A senior Obama administration official said he had conveyed his regret to Damascus via Russia. The same source added that the United States will continue to pursue compliance with the truce while continuing its military action against ISIS and the al-Qaida affiliated group in Syria.

USA: “informed Russia”. “The Russian counterpart had been informed before the air raids began, which would then hit Syrian military rather than ISIS targets,” reads a statement released in Washington by the US central military command stating that it has stopped air raids in Syria after Russia warned them that they had hit Syrian military. “This is a serious and blatant attack on Syria and its army”, the Damascus army denounces in a note, and “the certain proof of US support for Daesh and other terrorist groups”.

Meeting of the UN Security Council. The UN Security Council will meet at night, at Russia’s request, to discuss air strikes by the US-led coalition in Syria which, according to Moscow claims, targeted and killed Syrian military. The 15 members will meet in camera at 7:30 am local time, 00:30 am in Italy, diplomatic sources report. In a written statement, the Syrian Foreign Ministry asked the Security Council to condemn what it described as “an attack by the United States” and asked Washington to respect Syrian sovereignty. But it is unlikely that such a statement will come from the Council as it must be unanimously agreed.

Washington’s reply to the Russian-Syrian request is dry: Russia’s request for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council is “a stratagem, a diversionary maneuver, a cynical and hypocritical request”: the American ambassador told her United Nations, Samantha Power, talking to journalists. “Moscow must focus on the implementation of the ceasefire and not on these tricks,” he said.

And at the end of the meeting Moscow’s new attack on the United States was not lacking, increasing the climate of tension between the two superpowers on the Syria issue: The US coalition raid “was intentional, and an attempt to hijack the cooperation agreement between Moscow and Washington “, said the Russian ambassador to the United Nations,

US-Russia, arm wrestling. President Vladimir Putin, meanwhile, accuses the US of not having yet collaborated to identify and separate the Qaedist militia of the Fatah ash Sham Front (formerly Al Nusra) from the other opposition groups in order to bomb them. The result, he added, is that “we see the terrorist forces that are trying to reorganize themselves”. One response, that of the Kremlin leader, to the message sent late yesterday evening by US President Barack Obama according to which the US “will not take any further steps in the agreements with Moscow until they see seven continuous days of reduced violence and lasting humanitarian access “. And after the US air raid that killed dozens of Syrian soldiers, Moscow has come to the conclusion that Washington is defending ISIS. This is the position expressed by the spokesperson of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, reported by Tass. “If we had previously suspected that all this was to defend Jebhat al-Nusra, now, after the air raids on the Syrian army, we have reached the frightening conclusion that the White House defends ISIS,” said Zakharova.

Population to the extreme. For now, however, the populations at the end have not seen even the shadow of the expected humanitarian convoys. While the violence gradually increases in many regions of the country, including Aleppo and the suburbs around Damascus. Russia has accused armed opposition groups of violating the truce at least 55 times in the last 24 hours. On the opposition activists’ side, however, the National Observatory for Human Rights (Ondus) speaks of at least 13 civilians killed, including five children, in government bombardments, including aviation, in the provinces of Aleppo, Idlib and Homs. According to the Ondus, Turkey has meanwhile sent new troops to northern Syria to support its allied rebel groups in the ‘Shield of the Euphrates’ operation. A direct offensive not only against ISIS but also against the Kurdish Ypg militias.
