Katrina, a video inculpates Bush “Informed before the disaster”
WASHINGTON – Experts warned of the coming disaster, but George W. Bush downplayed without taking appropriate action. Shortly before the impact of Hurricane Katrina, a series of civil protection officials warned the US president of the risks that ran New Orleans, but he replied that he did not worry: “We are fully prepared,” he said. The whole scene was shot in a video, which has now been obtained and released by the Associated Press.
On August 29, 2005, a few hours before Katrina reached the southern coast of the US, Bush participated in a video briefing by civil protection officials, along with Internal Security Minister Michael Chertoff. In the video, now delivered by someone to the PA, the experts warned of the enormous risks that ran New Orleans, of the shortcomings in the emergency plan, of the possibility that they would give up the dikes and also of the inadequacy of the Superdome as a refuge.
Even the then head of the Fema (civil protection), Michael Brown, warned that there were not enough rescuers to help the evacuated in the Superdome, which actually became, after the hurricane, the epicenter of violence and the symbol of the lack of aid in New Orleans. “I am concerned about our ability to respond to a catastrophe disaster,” Brown said, referring to the situation in the sports building. The head of the Fema after Katrina resigned for the rescue fiasco.
Bush, according to the video and the transcript of the confidential briefing, did not ask a question and simply reassured everyone, at the end of the meeting, that the government was fully prepared.
