USA, Obama asks the Supreme Court to abolish the law that prohibits gay marriage
WASHINGTON – The administration of US President Barack Obama formally asked the Supreme Court to repeal a federal law of the 1990s that defines marriage as the union between a man and a woman. The text in fact, writes the White House in the request, “violates the fundamental guarantee of equality before the law and prevents” thousands of homosexual couples, legally married in their states, from enjoying the same federal advantages as heterosexual couples “.
Obama takes the field for , as he had pledged to do the settlement for the second term. Today, same-sex marriages are legal in nine US states out of 50 as well as in the capital Washington. The Obama administration’s decision to take a position in the debate does not come as a surprise: more than once, since the day of its second investiture, the president has spoken in favor of the rights of homosexuals both at local and federal level. The question of opening marriage to gay couples will be examined by the Supreme Court on 26 and 27 March.
Only a few days ago the president appeared in a commercial in favor of gay marriage with other celebrity endorsements like former Republican vice president Dick Cheney and Colin Powell. The video is the last initiative of the Respect For Marriage Coalition, an organization in favor of homosexual marriage, which cost a million dollars and is widespread in major American TV stations.
