USA, tragedy in Georgia: minors kill
a 13-month-old child in cold blood
BRUNSWICK (Georgia) – In Georgia, a fate of blood similar to a curse raged against a mother. In 2008, Sherry West lost her eighteen-year-old son, stabbed during a fight in New Jersey. Five years after that tragedy, Sherry suffered a genuine horror: her 13-month-old child shot dead in the head by two very young robbers. The police arrested two suspects, one 17-year-old Demarquis Elkins, the other even 14, whose name was not disclosed. But the agents have not yet found the murder weapon.
West was walking little Antonio in her stroller near their home, in the old town of Brunswick, a Georgia town, when the two boys blocked her way. Sherry’s story, given to the police and then to the media, makes the skin crawl.
“He asked me for money and I told him I didn’t have any. He kept asking me, and I told him I didn’t have any. So he said to me: do you want me to kill your child? I told him not to.”. At first the woman thought that the gun was only a toy, but seeing the determination of the young robber she hugged the baby to shield him with her body. The kid then pushed her to the side and said, “Well, then I’ll kill him,” and opened fire, shooting the baby in the head.
The woman was also wounded in the leg. The police immediately started a carpet search, knocking at every door in the area and also promising a $ 10,000 reward to anyone who gave useful information to catch the two kids.
Then the identification of the two names and the detention, but the investigations are going ahead. The police intend to indict Elkins, the 17-year-old, as an adult and not as a minor. The indictment, first-degree murder, in Georgia can also lead to a death sentence.
Police said the arrest occurred after scouring school records and carrying out a door-to-door search in all neighborhoods. The police chief said the reason for this “horrendous act” is still under investigation and the weapon has not yet been found. “I am glad that justice is done – said West – it is not something I will live well with. I am just glad they took him”.
