BAGHDAD – At least three car bombs exploded in Iraq today, in what appears to be a coordinated attack: the first, in Huaasinya, a suburb of Baghdad, killed four civilians and wounded 12 others; the second, near Falluja, hit a group of Sunni anti al Qaeda fighters, lined up to receive the salary, killing three, plus a civilian. 15 people injured.
The target of the third attack was a federal police convoy in Baiji, north of Baghdad: at least four officers were killed.
The group of fighters, known as Sahwa, is made up of Sunnis who have joined the US military to fight al Qaeda and are therefore seen as traitors by the Islamists.
In April there was a peak of violence in Iraq, with 402 deaths against 254 in the previous month.
