Iran: 5.7 earthquake near Bushehr nuclear power plant, 8 dead
TEHRAN – At least eight people lost their lives and 190 were injured due to a 5.7 magnitude earthquake that struck the Iranian coast, near the Bushehr nuclear power plant. Local authorities assured that there were no problems of any kind at the plant, located 60 kilometers from Borazjan, where the epicenter of the earthquake was located.
According to preliminary information, almost 250 houses have been destroyed and some electricity pylons have been demolished.
Iran is in one of the most seismic areas of the globe. In April a magnitude 7.8 earthquake caused 40 deaths in Pakistan, on the border with the Islamic Republic. In December 2003, an earthquake devastated the city of Bam, killing 26,000 people.
