GENEVA – An FA-18 fighter from the Swiss armed forces crashed in the canton of Obwalden: Peter Minder, head of communications from the Federal Department of Defense, Civil Protection and Sport (Ddps) confirmed this. The plane crashed into a rocky area and it is not yet clear if there are any casualties. The fighter flew in tandem with another F / A-18. This is the second crash of this type of aircraft in Switzerland: the first accident dates back to April 7, 1988, in Crans Montana. On that occasion two people died.

An eyewitness told the incident to the Swiss site Blick.ch. “I was on the balcony – he said – when I saw two FA-18s flying at low altitude. Then I heard a bang. A jet crashed into a rock wall “. The man immediately went to the place. ” On the road – he said – there was a lot of debris, even an engine and debris. And the wood that is on the wall was on fire. ” Laurent Savary, spokesperson of the Luftwaffe, the Swiss air force, confirmed that the appeal lacks an F-18D, a model with dual pilot. The crash site is located in Lopper between the cantons of Obwalden and Nidwalden, near the Alpnach air base, according to local residents, police, firefighters and an ambulance arrived.
