Variety celebrates the film by Avati on the eve of the nominations

LOS ANGELES – Promise in marriage to a rich industrialist, the young falls in love instead of a fascinating outsider who in his eyes represents salvation from the social norm, freedom, the possibility of expression of feeling. Nothing can separate them. If at this point we add “not even an iceberg” it would be Titanic. Without iceberg, the idea of The Witness of the Bridegroom, the film by Pupi Avati, is selected to represent Italy at the Oscars as best foreign film. And on the eve of the nominations of the 70th edition of the Oscars, which will be announced on Tuesday, two related stories for setting (early 900) but very different in size and budget, they stand out as the favorites in their respective categories. Already nominated for the best foreign film at the Golden Globe (beaten by the Belgian film “Ma vie en rose”) and in competition at the Berlin festival which opens on the 11th, The Witness with Inès Sastre and Diego Abatantuono has received great favors the few who could see it in America. The film was bought by October Films for American distribution. The same brothers Avati (director and producer) went to Los Angeles a month ago to present a preview, a very successful evening ended with a gala at the Italian Institute of Culture. The first review appeared in the United States, on Daily Variety by the critic Leonard Klady, is nothing short of exciting: “The film by Avati combines humor and sentiment, and examining the collision between past and future creates an enchanting fairytale that should result in a solid international success Despite being structured as a comedy of errors, the witness of the groom has much more to offer, let’s see the attitudes and values of modernity, especially in the need of Francesca (the protagonist ed) to claim their individuality. The conclusion has a taste of inevitability that gives the film a rare resonance and depth in the cinema
